On Saturday, December 5, 1992, in the Monticello Christian Church of Monticello, Indiana, he married Debra "Deb" (Hunt) Funk. She survives.

Dave was born and raised in Lebanon, Indiana. He was a 1972 graduate of Lebanon High School. He had worked at the Boone County Sheriff's Department for several years holding many positions including Dispatcher, Turnkey, and Merit Deputy. Later he became a Deputy Marshal for Whitestown, Indiana. He then went on to work at the Lebanon City Police Department as an Officer and K-9 Handler and did K-9 training for several other counties.  Dave moved to Monticello, Indiana in 1989 where his family had a lake cottage since 1959. He was a "jack of all trades".  He worked a variety of jobs throughout his career.  He was a mechanic for John Deere, head millwright for Indiana Farm Systems, a semi driver and a meter reader for NIPSCO.  He was instrumental in setting up the gun department for Rural King where he worked as the Firearms Manager for many years. Dave was a member of the AmVets Post 91 of Monticello, Indiana and an active member of the AmVet Riders. Dave was also active in the White County GOP.  He was a member of the former Twin Lakes Southern Baptist Church. Dave's hobbies included fishing, golfing, and riding motorcycles.  At the age of 18, he and some friends took a 16,000-mile motorcycle trip covering 37 states, Canada, and Mexico.  In his younger years he was an excellent water skier and swimmer.  He was once asked to ski at Cypress Gardens.

Dave is survived by his wife Deb McClaine of Monticello, Indiana; children, Scott (wife Tina) Watson of Peoria, Arizona, Kristina "Kristy" (husband Shanon) Campbell of Frankfort, Indiana, stepchildren, Polly (husband Gabe) Deno of Monticello, Indiana, Heidi Funk, Burnettsville, Indiana, Tyler (wife Relisa) Funk of Monticello, Indiana; grandchildren, Devin Watson, Darcie Baker, Justin Baker, and Nathan Campbell; many step grandchildren, and great grandchildren; sister, Eldenna Stevenson of Virginia; sister-in-law, Donna (husband Russ) DeArmond of Remington, Indiana; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.
