Obituary

David Walter Henke, 82, of Idaville, Indiana died on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at his home following an extended illness surrounded by his family.

David was born Saturday, September 6, 1941, in Weston, Indiana to Walter F. and Virginia (Jones) Henke. They preceded him in death.

On Saturday, July 14, 1973, David married Victoria L. "Vicki" Whiteman at the Elmwood Church of Christ in Lafayette, Indiana.  David and Vicki were married for 50 wonderful years together - he passed just one week shy of their 51st.

David resided in Shelbyville and Lafayette before making Idaville his home for the past 51 years. He spent most of his working career at Monon Trailer from 1977 until 2002 and then from 2002 until 2009 for Wabash Trailer. David could always be found out in his garage tinkering on things.  He always had his radio on and played the same tape over and over from Elmwood Church of Christ.  David spent countless hours working on cars with his boys and known for his metal flowers.  David always enjoyed making brownies with his grandkids.  He was never scared to tell you how he felt, and his favorite saying was "We are here because we are not there."

Surviving family includes his wife Victoria L. "Vicki" Henke of Idaville; two sons, John D. (Athena) Henke of Idaville and Carl A. (Treana) Henke of Falkville, Alabama; grandchildren Kaitlin (Bruce) Gunther of Monticello, Luc (Kilen) Henke of Burnettsville, Elina Henke of Idaville, Starlett Henke of Kokomo, David (Mackenzie) and Charity Henke, all of Fort Wayne, Emmalie Hodge of Monticello, and Megan Hodge of Fort Wayne; great-grandchildren, Karter, Maya, Addalyn, Holden, Waylon, Alaska, Serenity, Percy, and River, sisters-in-law, Cheryl Anderson,  Jeanne (Charlie) Schauer, and Hope (Terry) Davidson; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sara (Harry) Hodges and Ellen (Gene) Whipple; mother and father-in-law, Zelma and Herb Whiteman, and brothers-in-law Fred Whiteman and Charles Anderson, niece, Z. Deanne Schauer.
