James Howard Humphrey, 87, of Monticello, Indiana, formerly of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at his residence with his family by his side.

James was born on March 11, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Edith (Honeychurch) and James Humphrey.

On August 21, 1968, in St. George Catholic Church of Chicago, Illinois he married Marilyn J. Menconi.

James spent 25 years in Las Vegas, Nevada with his wife enjoying their retirement before moving back to the Midwest two years ago to be closer to their family. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois where he dedicated 26 years of his life protecting and serving the city he loved. For most of his career, he served with distinction within the Canine Unit. Before his decorated career in law enforcement, James proudly served his country as a veteran in the U.S. Marine Corp and carried those values of discipline and honor throughout his entire life. While James took immense pride in the star he wore and his country that he served, his greatest joy was his family. James was loved by all who knew him for being the life of the party and a great joke teller. He loved to entertain his family with singing and playing the guitar and whistling. He enjoyed hunting and golfing. He especially enjoyed country music and westerns.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Marilyn J. Humphrey of 58 years, of Monticello, Indiana; children, Dawn (Dan) Dworniczek, Bonnie (Laura Dalton) Humphrey, Nick (Annette) Humphrey, Kathy Erhardt, and Sue (Jeff) Shade; proud grandfather of 7 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Parkhurst and Janet Cassin; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, with a wide circle of extended family, friends, and neighbors.

James is preceded in death by his father, James Humphrey; mother, Edith Wiora; stepfather, Frank Wiora; first wife, Barbara (Barick) Humphrey; brother, Lawerence "Larry" Humphrey; son-in-law, Joseph Erhardt.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 11:00 a.m. until time of Rosary at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church of Monticello, Indiana. (543 S. Main St., Monticello, IN 47960).

Rite of Christian Burial will be read at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church of Monticello, Indiana, with Father Dan Duff Officiating, followed by Full Military Rites conducted by the Monticello Veterans Honor Guard.

Burial will be private for the family.
