James Truman
"Jim" Marvin
June 1, 1935 – May 29, 2024
James Truman "Jim" Marvin, 88, of Idaville, Indiana, died peacefully surrounded by his family on May 29, 2024, at Indiana University Health White Memorial Hospital in Monticello, Indiana.
Jim was born on June 1, 1935, in Monticello, Indiana to James Delancy and Rosemary Rita (Holeman) Marvin. They both preceded him in death.
On June 23, 1957, at the Idaville United Methodist Church, he married Marjean Scroggs. She survives.
Jim was raised in Idaville, where he resided most of his life. He was a 1954 graduate of Idaville High School (Go Greenstreaks!), where he developed lifelong friendships which, helped by Dave Fisher and Keith Raderstorf, contributed to his mother's greying hair. After high school, Jim attended Barber School in Indianapolis, Indiana. After barbering and driving the school bus, Jim worked and retired from Hickgas of Monticello, Indiana. He was an active member of the Idaville Fire Department and kept tabs on them until his dying day. Jim was a former member of the Masonic Lodge of Royal Center as well as a member of the Idaville Church of God. Jim was an avid softball player for both the Idaville Independents and the Monticello Merchants, an accomplished trap shooter, competed in the Demolition Derby with Don Cade (even though he was a Reynolds Ranger), and loved fishing. Jim and Marjean loved to travel. Some of their favorite spots were Marlene's cabin in Crystal Falls, Michigan, where he fished with Dudley on his beloved Liver Lake – and took a bath every night in its beautiful rusty waters with his bar of Irish Spring, and when finished, announced his return by singing Bringing in the Sheaves, the Florida Space Coast, where they spent their winters with Bud and Virginia and John and Marilyn after retirement, and Alaska, where they toured for two and a half months in a motorhome convoy of friends and family. Jim was loved by many. He was an amazing husband and father, and you couldn't have asked for a better grandpa or friend. Jim did not know a stranger. Along with collecting friends, Jim spent years collecting Pennsylvania Railroad lanterns, which was a memory from his childhood as his father worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He took great pride in his vegetable garden and would compete to have the earliest and best tomatoes. He was known as the Mayor of Idaville, and when he wasn't sitting in the driveway talking with friends and waving at neighbors, he was patrolling the town on his golf cart. When he wasn't on his golf cart, he was watching westerns, especially John Wayne movies and Gunsmoke with Marshall Dillion, or listening to Johnny Cash.
Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjean Marvin of Idaville, Indiana; daughter, Tamera L. (Ray Elmer) Hardesty of West Lafayette, Indiana; son, James Timothy "Tim" (Marie) Marvin of Idaville, Indiana; grandchildren, Lynn (Dan Frank) Parrish of West Lafayette, Indiana, Holly Nicole Hardesty of West Lafayette, Indiana, Alex (Paige) Ropp of Brookston, Indiana, Scott (Lexi Spear) Marvin of Goodland, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Truman Parrish of West Lafayette, Indiana, Jon Ropp of Brookston, Indiana, Christa (Kaleb Taber) Marvin of Monticello, Indiana; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James Delancy & Rosemary Rita (Holeman) Marvin; brother, John Marvin; parents-in-law, James and Viola (Shafer) Scroggs; brother-in-law, Donald Scroggs; and granddaughter, Heather Marie Marvin.
