Michael Raye Chaplin Sr., known as Mike to most, age 84, 2026 passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, September 28, 2026. He was born on March 17, 1942 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Norma Stamm and Milburn (Corbin) Chaplin. 

During the boys’ early years, Mike enjoyed coaching all three of his sons in Little League sports and spending time playing cards with friends. He was also a proud member of the American Legion. Mike spent 24 years at Allison Transmission as an engineer and gear specialist before retiring in 1986. That same year, he and a business partner founded Contour Hardening. They spent many years sponsoring different race teams and enjoying all the Indy 500 had to offer. He remained with the company until his retirement in 2006. In retirement, Mike enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures, including golf, a good “big boy drink,” and spending time at the lake and in Florida. He also continued his passion for consulting and helping businesses whenever the opportunity arose. 

Mike is survived by his two sons, Tim (Kim) Chaplin and Brad (Jennifer) Chaplin and daughter in law Angela Chaplin; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren plus another one due in 2027. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Raye Chaplin Jr. 

Mike leaves behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and generosity that touched his family, friends, and the many people he worked with throughout his life. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
