Robert E. "Bob" Brining, 80, of Monticello, Indiana died unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at IU Health White Memorial Hospital following an accident.
Bob was born on Friday, November 17, 1944, in Moline, Illinois to John and Dorothy (Johnston) Brining and raised by Lowell G. and Dorothy Swartout. They preceded him in death.
On Friday, August 16, 1974, in Portland, Maine, he married Janice M. "Jan" Sutherland. He recently commented they had been married over 50 years and how wonderful it was to still be in love. She survives.
Bob was a 1962 graduate of Galesburg High School in Galesburg, Illinois. He attended Monmouth College and later graduated from Aurora College. Bob served overseas in the United States Army serving in Korea after the Korean War time. He retired from Caterpillar in December of 2002. After vacationing as a family here at Indiana Beach for over 30 years, Bob and Jan finally made Monticello their home. Bob was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 32 years, contributing as a sponsor, mentor, and volunteer. Bob was known for his fixing and tinkering skills, volunteering at local schools and churches. He was an avid amateur photographer and a member of the Planetary Society. Bob loved all animals especially the beloved family dogs. He was naturally helpful and would lend a hand to anyone in need.
Bob was survived by his wife Jan Brining of Monticello, Indiana; sons, Zachary (wife Melanie) Brining of Hendersonville, TN and Ryan (wife Renee) Brining of Aurora, Illinois; grandchildren, Scarlett, Wyatt, and Belle Brining and Malcolm and Claudia Wiseman; sister-in-law, Connie Brining of Lacey, Washington; nieces, Jeri (wife Lisa) Brining and Mary (husband Eugene) Bell; and nephew, Doug (wife Belinda) Brining.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John Brining and Dorothy and Lowell Swartout; son, Joshua L. Brining; and brother, John Brining
A visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of Mass at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Reynolds, Indiana.
A Roman Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Reynolds, Indiana.
Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery of Reynolds, Indiana.
